our mission
"They all ate and were satisfied, and the disciples picked up
twelve basketfuls..."
-Matthew 14:20
The 12 Baskets 4 Kids Fund is a targeted initiative with a two-phase objective:
1. Eliminate school meal debt across the state of Oklahoma, and
2. Establish funding mechanisms for proactive meal provision
School meal debt represents a significant operational challenge for districts. It creates administrative burdens, strains budgets, and can result in negative meal service protocols that disrupt the learning environment.
In Oklahoma, 745,130 people are facing hunger - and of them 231,800 are children.
School meal debt disproportionately affects children in households facing economic uncertainty. This high concentration of economic need demonstrates that meal debt is not an isolated issue but a systemic one tied to broader financial pressures on families and schools.
Our Strategic Response:
-
Debt Elimination: We provide grants to school districts to retire outstanding student meal debt. This intervention clears a liability from district ledgers and removes a barrier to student well-being and focus.
-
Systemic Funding: Following debt clearance, we partner with districts to develop and fund sustainable solutions—such as meal scholarships or universal meal programs—that prevent future debt accumulation. This proactive approach supports predictable budgeting and ensures consistent student access to nutrition.
Our name, inspired by the biblical account of Jesus Feeding the 5,000, frames our operational model. We are structured to address a clear need without waste, transforming scarcity into sufficiency for Oklahoma's students.
By removing the burden of meal debt, we allow schools to redirect resources toward core educational outcomes and ensure all students have the foundational support required to succeed.
